Birth + Reproductive Health

Doulas and Birth Resources

Elephant Song Doula Services provides virtual birth planning, childbirth education, prenatal visits, birth doula support, postpartum visits, and lactation care to Black families.

Maya Organization offer no cost prenatal classes, free doula services, and birth resources.

Healthy Start uses a multidisciplinary team model which is inclusive of Community Health Workers, Certified Lactation Consultants and Counselors, Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educators, Certified Doulas, nurses, licensed mental health clinicians, researchers, Community Health Advocates and other public health practitioners who support the Allegheny County’s birthing community.

UPMC pelvic floor physical therapy support prenatal and postpartum health. (The Squirrel Hill location has some great providers.)

Resilient Motherhood provides home-based pelvic floor physical therapy to address diastasis recti, pain, and core recovery afterbirth.

Prenatal Chiropractors

Roots Chiropractic care during pregnancy support the alleviation of back pain, hip pain, headaches and other types of discomfort; promotes optimal fetal positioning; and supports decreased labor time.

Studio art classes for youth and adults

The Union Project offers in person ceramics classes for people of all ages.

The Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild delivers studio arts class for youth and adults. Studio arts classes occur in school and on-site in the North Side state of the art facility.

PCA&M (formally Pittsburgh Center for the Arts) advances creative excellence in the arts, including studio, media, and creative writing. To achieve its mission, PCA&M provides equipment and facilities for individual artists, conducts educational programs, and stimulates public awareness and understanding through demonstrations, artist residencies, and exhibitions to cultivate a thriving arts community.

Artist Residencies and Network Support

Sibyls Shrine is an artist residency program for Black women, womxn, trans women, and femmes who are mothers and identify as artists, creatives, and/or activists in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Boom Concepts offers artist studios in auxiliary locations across Pittsburgh’s unique neighborhoods, spaces, and resources catered to each artist’s creative and professional goals. Check out their facebook page for current events and opportunities.

Brew House Association supports both artists and curators in their imaginative endeavors. Through programs for both curators and artists, provides space, professional developments, mentorship and more to bring a creative idea to life and connect them to audiences.

Arts Funding, Directories, and General Resources

The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments created the Investing in Professional Artists: The Pittsburgh Region Artists program guided by a shared belief in artistic excellence, creative development and the need for continuous career advancement for the region’s professional artists.

Pittsburgh Artist Resources is an all inclusive website and directory for funding, residency opportunities, networking, and support from local Pittsburgh organizations.

Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council provides funding opportunities, call for artists, and general support for the arts landscape.

YogaRoots On Location provides social justice and antiracism-centered Raja Yoga classes, professional development, and yoga teacher trainings.

Sweet Rain Healing offers holistic practices in multiple modalities, including inclusive yoga, energetic Reiki healing, breath work and more.

Spellbound Herbals shares handcrafted, seasonal and ceremonially made offerings, usually in the form of small batch, limited medicines

Cutting Root Farm +& Apothecary offers live plants for sale in the spring and fall, fresh herbs are available seasonally (check out the CSA page for more info), our cut flowers, and all of our apothecary products are made using organic herbs. They also host gatherings, classes, and volunteer days.

Moonset & Co. offers practical, emotional, and spiritual support for dying, grief, and loss of all kinds.


Alecia Dawn Young

Alecia Dawn Young is yoga and meditation guide, artist, scholar, and is the founder of YOGAMOTIF. With a career that spans a commitment to community arts education and wellness, her work is grounded in the collective healing of Black m/others and the relationship between arts education, mental health, and well-being. Alecia holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University, Master of Arts Management from Carnegie Mellon University, and is a PhD student at the University of Pittsburgh.
