Alecia dawn young
Art and wellness have been themes in Alecia’s life, but it was truly a scenic route to founding her business, YOGAMOTIF. She studied sculpture and education in college and taught K-12 art, math and communications.
After receiving a master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University, she held a variety of arts and education-focused jobs while maintaining a thread of consistent wellness — running full and half marathons, biking, and practicing yoga. After giving birth to a daughter and becoming a 200-hour certified yoga teacher, she noticed wellness deficits in her own life and in the lives of others, leading her to found YOGAMOTIF.
Alecia, a Pittsburgh native, volunteers her time as a yoga instructor and is the former board chair of New Voices for Reproductive Justice, an organization that supports black women, femmes and girls. She currently lives on the northside with her husband and two young children.
Carrie McCann is a facilitator, yoga instructor, and maker. After chronic health issues and a health scare, she decided to pursue an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach Certification in an effort to facilitate deeper healing for herself and start to share what she was learning with others. At the same time, she was re-learning her body and reconnecting to her spiritual and emotional self through her yoga practice. When she was recommended to YogaRoots on location, taking the 200 hour, anti-racist Raja Yoga teacher certification was an easy choice.
Carrie’s background in social work blends well with her explorations into yoga, plants, and syncing with our natural seasons and cycles. She believes that small changes can make big change and loves holding space for people to care for themselves, rest, create, and explore what holistic health looks like for them.
I’m not good at yoga. Is this retreat right for me?
There is no such thing at being good at yoga. If you have a body, you are good at yoga. If you are interested in breathing, moving, and maybe breathing and moving at the same time, then YES! This retreat is right for you! Flexibility not required- all bodies are welcome here.
What kind of yoga do you practice/teach?
Both Alecia and Carrie were trained in Raja Yoga by YogaRoots On Location. In Raja yoga, Asana (or physical practice, what most of us in the West think of when we think of yoga) is just one piece. So we will move, but we will also practice various breathing and meditation techniques, and share practices to support how we care for ourselves and each other.
Who will watch my children?
We are glad you asked. Safe, experienced, child-care professionals. With Alecia’s background in education and current status of mom, and Carrie’s background in social work and nannying, we take great care to make sure the people running the youth portion are not just qualified but are experienced.
I have special dietary needs. Will I be accommodated?
Absolutely! Gluten free? Me too. Don’t eat meat? Awesome! Dairy hurts your guts? Us too. Nut allergies? Bring them on. Please let us know your dietary needs in advance!
